You applied to college, now what?
Congrats on submitting your college applications, but you're not done yet! Here are the next steps you need to follow:
- Activate & manage college email accounts- this is what schools will use to communicate with you so set it up ASAP and check emails periodically.
- Activate & manage student portals- all admissions info, deadlines, payments, financial aid, and other important forms will be on your student portal. There may not be a lot here until February or March, but you should log in periodically.
- Complete FAFSA/CADAA & follow up- Applications open on October 1st of your senior year, applying early can get you more financial aid, especially for most private schools. Make sure to complete and submit prior to the deadline: March 2nd of your senior year. Also, you may need additional information to submit, you will see this on your student portals. You will see your financial aid offers in your student portal, and you will note that the amount may vary by school.
- Apply for Housing- If you're planning to live on campus, you'll need to apply for this usually in early April. There may be a fee involved and it varies by school.
- Accept Enrollment- May 1st is the deadline to complete your "Intent to Enroll". This is usually completed in your student portal and will require a payment that will later be used to cover tuition fees. Once you've considered your options and make a choice on where you would like to attend, you can accept admissions.
- Apply & attend orientation- Orientation is mandatory for most schools. You will receive emails on where to go to apply for an orientation session.
- Summer Programs- look for Summer Bridge or other programs that will help in transitioning from high school to college. You may receive information via email or you can look on the school's website for more information and to apply.
- Placement Test- if you will need to take a placement test for English or Mathematics, make sure to apply early. This will help determine what level you will start in. Please note that this may not be required by all students as placement may be determined by your high school classes and grades.
